ICAI CA Final Exams to Be Held Thrice a Year Starting from 2025
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced a major change in the CA Final examination schedule. Starting from 2025, the CA Final exams will be conducted three times a year instead of twice. This new schedule will offer more flexibility and opportunities for CA aspirants. This decision is part of ICAI’s efforts to make the exam process more student-friendly and efficient.
New CA Final Exam Schedule
Earlier, ICAI conducted CA Final exams twice a year, in May and November. However, from 2025 onward, the exams will be held in January, May, and September. This change will help students by reducing their waiting time and providing more chances to clear the exams without delays. The registration and exam application processes will remain the same, and ICAI will announce the detailed timetable soon.
Official Announcement by ICAI
To align with global best practices and offer students greater opportunities, the 26th Council of ICAI has made a historic decision to conduct the CA Final exam three times a year instead of twice. Previously, ICAI introduced this change for the Intermediate and Foundation courses, and now the CA Final exam will also follow the same pattern.
With this update, all three levels—CA Final, Intermediate, and Foundation—will now have equal exam attempts each year. The exams will be held in January, May, and September, giving students more chances to appear and plan their preparation effectively.
Benefits of Conducting CA Final Exams Thrice a Year
- More Attempts for Students: Candidates will now get three chances a year to clear their exams, reducing stress and pressure.
- Faster Career Progression: Since the exam results will be announced more frequently, students can qualify as CAs sooner and start their careers earlier.
- Reduced Waiting Period: Previously, students who failed an attempt had to wait for six months for the next exam. Now, they only need to wait for four months.
- Better Preparation Strategy: With more attempts, students can plan their studies better and improve their performance.
- Improved Pass Rate: Frequent exams can lead to better preparation and, eventually, higher pass rates.
- Alignment with Global Standards: Many international accounting and finance certifications conduct exams multiple times a year. This move brings ICAI’s exam system closer to global standards.
Challenges of the New CA Final Exam System
- Study Planning: With exams being held every four months, students must plan their studies efficiently to stay prepared year-round.
- Increased Exam Fees: More exam attempts could mean higher costs for students who reappear multiple times.
- Logistical Issues: ICAI will have to manage additional logistical challenges such as exam centers, question paper preparation, evaluation, and result processing.
- Coaching Adjustments: Coaching institutes will need to modify their batch schedules and study plans to match the new exam cycle.
- Mental Fatigue: Students might feel increased pressure due to shorter preparation gaps between exams.
What is the reason behind ICAI’s decision to conduct CA exams thrice a year?
ICAI has taken this decision to make the CA exam process more student-friendly. The council believes that increasing the number of exams will enhance the quality of chartered accountants and align with global education standards. The ICAI president has stated that this change aims to reduce stress and allow students to complete the course at their own pace.
This decision reflects ICAI’s commitment to supporting students on their journey to becoming chartered accountants. By offering more exam dates, students can plan their studies better and retake exams sooner if needed. The primary goal is to ease stress and improve the overall exam experience for candidates.
